How we handle data on this website

Last updated: 5 August 2026

This notice explains what happens to your data when you visit hinterland.systems. Our separate Privacy Policy DAO covers the data altruism services; this page is only about the website.

1. Who is responsible

Hinterland Systems – Verein zur Förderung von regenerativen Regionalsystemen
c/o Climate Lab, Spittelauer Lände 45, 1090 Vienna, Austria
Register of Associations (ZVR): 1596541419
E-Mail: office@hinterland.systems

For data protection matters: Mag. Sebastian Haas, seb@hinterland.systems

2. Hosting and server logs

This website runs on our own infrastructure at Scaleway in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It is not hosted by a third-party website provider.

When you open a page, our server briefly records the request: IP address, date and time, the address requested, the referring page and your browser identification. This is necessary to deliver the page and to detect attacks. Legal basis is our legitimate interest in secure, reliable operation (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). These logs are short-lived, are not combined with other data and are not used to identify you.

3. Cookies

This website sets no cookies and uses no tracking pixels. That is why you see no cookie banner — there is nothing to consent to.

4. Visitor statistics

We use Umami, which we run ourselves on our own servers in Amsterdam. Your visit is not shared with any analytics company, and the data never leaves our infrastructure.

We record which pages were opened, how long a visit lasted, the referring site, and the browser, operating system and device type. Your IP address is used only in passing — to derive an approximate country and a daily, non-reversible identifier — and is not stored. No cookies are involved and you are not recognised across different websites or beyond a single day.

Legal basis is our legitimate interest in understanding which content is useful (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Because the data is neither personally identifiable nor cookie-based, no consent is required.

5. Map on the start page

The interactive map is provided by MapTiler (MapTiler AG, Switzerland). When the map loads, your browser contacts MapTiler's servers directly and transmits your IP address; without this, the map cannot be shown. Switzerland is recognised by the European Commission as providing an adequate level of data protection. Legal basis is our legitimate interest in presenting our regional focus visually (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Details are in MapTiler's privacy policy.

6. Links to other sites

We link to partner organisations, LinkedIn and X. These are plain links, not embedded content: no data reaches those providers until you actually click. Once you do, their own privacy policies apply.

7. Contacting us

If you write to us by e-mail, we process your address and the content of your message in order to reply, on the basis of Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR or, where your message concerns a contract, Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR. We keep such correspondence only as long as needed to deal with the matter and to meet retention obligations.

8. Your rights

You have the right to obtain access to your data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, and to receive it in a portable form, where the legal conditions are met. Where processing rests on consent, you may withdraw it at any time with effect for the future. Please write to seb@hinterland.systems.

We do not use automated decision-making or profiling.

9. Right to complain

If you believe we handle your data unlawfully, you can complain to the Austrian Data Protection Authority:
